Living Near Percy Warner Park & Radnor Lake: Nashville's Best Parks for Homebuyers
Why Nashville's Parks Belong on Your Home Search Checklist
Ask anyone who has lived in Nashville for a while what they love most, and you'll hear about the music, the food and the people. Then, almost every time, you'll hear about the parks.
Nashville is blessed with some of the most beautiful green space of any city in the South. Percy Warner Park and Radnor Lake are the two crown jewels, and for many of my clients, living close to one of them is at the top of the wish list.
I've spent 15 years helping families find homes in Middle Tennessee. As a dad of three boys who'd rather be outside than anywhere else, I can tell you that a short drive to a trailhead changes your weekends. Here's what makes these parks special, a few more worth knowing, and the neighborhoods that put you closest to them.
Percy Warner Park: Nashville's Backyard Escape
Percy Warner Park is the larger half of the Warner Parks, which together cover more than 3,000 acres on Nashville's southwest side. It is one of the largest municipally run parks in Tennessee, and it feels a world away from downtown even though it's only about 20 minutes out.
What to do at Percy Warner Park
- Walk the Allée and the stone steps. Enter through the iconic stone gates at the end of Belle Meade Boulevard and climb the steps for one of the best views in town.
- Hike or run the trails. Loops range from short, kid-friendly walks to longer, hilly routes that serious runners love.
- Drive or bike the scenic roads. Winding paved roads through the hardwood forest are popular with cyclists, especially on weekend mornings.
- Ride horseback. The park has an extensive network of equestrian trails.
- Catch the Iroquois Steeplechase. Every May, this historic horse race draws thousands to the park for one of Nashville's signature spring traditions.
- Golf. Percy Warner Golf Course is a classic nine-hole course that's great for beginners and quick rounds.
Insider tip: Arrive early on fall weekends. When the leaves turn, the overlooks and parking areas fill up fast.
Radnor Lake State Park: A Nature Sanctuary in the City
Radnor Lake is a protected State Natural Area of roughly 1,400 acres, tucked between Oak Hill, Forest Hills and Crieve Hall. It is one of the most visited state parks in Tennessee, and for good reason: it is quiet, wild and only minutes from Green Hills shopping.
The lake was built in the early 1900s by the L&N Railroad. In the 1970s, local residents rallied to save it from development, and it became Tennessee's first State Natural Area. That community spirit is still part of the neighborhood's character today.
What to do at Radnor Lake
- Walk the Lake Trail. This easy, mostly flat loop hugs the shoreline and is perfect for families.
- Climb the ridge trails. For more of a workout, the South Cove and Ridge trails offer steep climbs and great views.
- Spot wildlife. Deer, owls, herons, turtles and even the occasional otter make Radnor a favorite for birdwatchers and photographers.
- Visit the Nature Center. Exhibits and ranger programs make it a great stop with kids.
Good to know: Radnor is a natural area, so there's no biking, jogging, picnicking or fishing on most trails. Check the park's posted rules (including pet rules) before you go. Parking lots fill early on weekends.
